Routine testing in March identified the pathogen that causes sudden oak death at Monrovia Growers' Azusa, Calif., nursery. Monrovia was informed on March 9 that USDA and the California Department of Food and Agriculture had identified Phytophthora ramorum on six camellia varieties. Garden centers that have received shipments of the host camellia varieties in the past 12 months will be contacted and inspected. Protocol varies by state on how inspections will be handled.
