Description
A. balcanicus is an outstanding perennial with distinctive, deeply lobed, dark green foliage. Excellent foliage plant. Sold under the names of A. hungaricus and A. longifolius, plants are also similar in habit and flower to A. mollis. The leaves are lobed with wide gaps between the lobes (the gap is referred to as a sinus), and the lobes are narrowed at the base, characteristics that distinguish it from A. mollis. The beautiful flower stems rise an additional 3 to 4' and bear numerous white and purple flowers in mid- to late summer. The bracts surrounding the flowers have 5 to 7 veins and are very sharp. The foliage is more winter hardy than the flowers and the leaves may emerge in the spring but no flowers may occur. Plants perform well in most gardens, and they perform better in southeastern gardens than A. mollis.
