Pronounce Latin Name
Category: Perennials
Hardiness Zone: 5 to 7
Light: Partial shade

There are few garden scenes as delightful as a bed of pink and white hardy cyclamen gracing the base of a mature tree in a fall garden. The pointed flower buds arise in the fall before the foliage and open into glorious stands of warm pink and white. The ivy-shaped leaves are up to 4 to 6" long but more beautiful than any ivy. They are gray-green and have attractive patterns of purple marbling. The foliage persists all winter before going dormant in late spring. The leaves vary from deep green to those with a silver sheen. As the flowers fall off, the flower stem bearing the seeds begins to twist and coil until the stem capsule is brought close to the ground. At that point, the seeds are released, ensuring they fall near the original planting. The spiraling of the peduncle is responsible for the genus name, after the Greek kyklos, meaning circular.
